Just about an hour north of Tampa lies the Chassahowitzka River, or simply the Chaz. This river is home to numerous springs and is part of the larger Crystal River complex. The national wildlife refuge was created in 1943 to protect this popular area.
Chassahowitzka is an old Native American word meaning place of the hanging pumpkin. The Seminole Indians were common in this area and several of their villages have been identified in the local area. In addition to the gourds (which have unfortunately gone extinct), they hunted the plentiful wildlife and caught fish and crabs in the river.
For those who have joined us on this expedition before, the unanimous conclusion is this is a place of unparalleled beauty. Our hosts at our base camp defined the essence of hospitality, and the food's not bad either!
We will be staying at the Chassahowitzka Hotel. Rooms are double occupancy, but a single supplement is available on request. Please be aware, the bathrooms are shared in a dormitory-type arrangement.
Your package includes Breakfast: Fri, Sat and Sunday, Lunch on Thursday and Friday, Dinner nightly Thusday through Saturday. In addition, there is a cooler stocked with beer, wine, sodas, and water by the ice cooler on the front deck.
